Of all the types of soil that farmers can drill, rocky soils are the most challenging. While digging holes in sandy or loamy soil is relatively easy, the presence of rocks and stones becomes a long and labored process.
The moment your tool’s blades come in contact with rocks, you must stop what you’re doing and remove the rock instead of removing shovels of soil quickly and easily – and you have to do that every time you encounter rocks while digging the earth.
Digging tools like shovels, digging bars, and clamshell post diggers are usually heavy and have blades and sharp points that help loosen rocky soils from the post hole.
But even with these tools, digging post holes is still tedious and exhausting. You will need to put a lot of effort into the process, especially if you haven’t dug a post hole before.
Instead of using the rudimentary tools mentioned, ease your digging projects with the latest and most advanced post hole diggers from Shaver. They will reduce the time and effort invested in this task and help you correctly dig post holes, leading to perfectly aligned, stable, and secure posts and fences.

Shaver’s standard auger options
Shaver offers augers in varying sizes, including diameters from 4 to 30 inches. They come in the 42-inch standard length. They are available in double flight and semi-double flight. You can get bolt-on auger extensions in 9 and 14 inches when you need added depth.
1) Orchard augers
Shaver’s orchard augers are explicitly designed for the nursery and orchard industry. The augers come in standard diameters of 16, 18, 24, and 30 inches and have a standard length of 30 inches. The auger’s points are made of extremely hard, austempered ductile iron to have longer wear. The cutting teeth, made from forged steel, are bolted on and can be easily replaced when worn.
2) Rock augers
Shaver’s rock augers were designed for extremely rugged conditions. These conditions may include solid rock, loose rock, dirt, and clay. The rock augers can also be used on any Shaver post hole digger models (depending on size). They’re also available in diameters ranging from 4 1/2 to 30 inches. The augers have replaceable carbide bullet teeth, a 3/4-inch-thick double-flight boring head, and a 3/8-inch-thick flighting with Rockwell 65 hardfacing.
Shaver’s Down Pressure Kit provides heavier-duty digging power by offering an additional 500 lbs. of downward force. The unit can easily attach to both the hydraulic and PTO diggers. It is powered by using the hydraulics from your skid steer loader or tractor, meaning it won’t interfere with the digger’s regular operation. This option is ideal for working in rocky areas, compact soil, or semi-frozen ground.
Shaver’s lineup of professional-grade post hole diggers allows you to dig holes quickly and efficiently in the diameter and depth you require. Its hydraulic and PTO-powered models are engineered even for the toughest soil conditions, such as rocky soils. They are designed to meet the needs of farmers, nursery workers, ranchers, and construction professionals.
