Washington

Washington, as a state, may be best known for its apples, but the Evergreen State has many other agricultural products to offer.

Washington’s rich volcanic soils, diverse climate, and large-scale irrigation networks benefit the state’s agriculture, helping the farmers produce more than 300 various agricultural products.

Western Washington is known for its valleys and cool climate, suitable for growing berries and flowers and raising poultry and dairy cows. The region is also known for its nurseries. Eastern Washington’s warmer and drier climate conditions are suitable for cattle ranching, dairy farming, and growing various vegetables and fruits, including wine grapes.

Yields per acre for produce like apples, dryland wheat, and potatoes, as well as milk production per cow, are some of the ample proofs of Washington’s leadership in agriculture and food production in the United States.

In addition, Washington is also a prime location for exporting its agricultural commodities around the world and has an easy access to export markets in Asia.

Here are some more fascinating facts about agriculture in Washington state:

1. More than 39,000 farms operate on over 15 million acres across Washington state.

2. About 95% of these farms are family-owned and operated.

3. 83% of these farms are classified as small, while 63% are less than 50 acres.

4. Washington state’s agriculture industry has created around 545,000 jobs.

5. Agriculture is Washington’s second-largest export, making the state the third-largest agricultural exporter in the United States.

6. More than 300 commercial crops and livestock are produced in Washington state.

7. The state’s agriculture industry generates more than $20.4 billion annually.

8. Washington state is US’s number one producer of apples, blueberries, hops, pears, spearmint oil, and sweet cherries.

9. Washington’s apple industry produces more than 70% of apples grown in the US.

10. Washington is the number two producer of apricots, asparagus, grapes, potatoes, and raspberries.

11. The state ranks third in dried peas, lentils, and onions.

12. Washington is second-largest producer of wines in the country and is home to over 1,000 wineries.

Washington’s diverse agricultural industry and economy extend to forestry and aquaculture. It is not called “The Evergreen State” for nothing. Around 50% of Washington consists of forestland. The state’s forestry industry has created more than 165,000 jobs. Washington is also the second-largest seafood producer in the US.

To further boost yields, farmers in Washington turn to the latest generation of agricultural equipment using mechanized, robotic, and automated technologies to improve crop production and reduce the need for manual labor. Using such modern agricultural equipment saves time, money, and labor, resulting in improved crop yields and bountiful harvests.

As a distributor of farm, landscape, and light construction equipment, Solex Corporation offers a line of agricultural equipment developed by various manufacturers from the US and Europe.
